Dr Max's hospitality industry secret about Mazda Motor Corporation

In 1920 Ingiro Matsuda founded the forerunner to the now world famous Mazda Motor Corporation. That company was Toyo Cork Kogyo and it began in Hiroshima. Hence 2000 celebrates the 80th anniversary of this company. Toyo Kogyo changed its name to Mazda Motor Corporation in 1984 and opened a US plant the next year. ("Mazda" is loosely derived from Matsuda's name, but the carmaker has never discouraged an association with the Zoroastrian god of light, Ahura Mazda.)

Operating from two Japanese and 16 international manufacturing plants, Mazda sells some 335,000 vehicles annually in Japan and almost 550,000 more in other countries. The company is leveraging its association with Ford, which owns a controlling 33% of Mazda, by sharing engine and vehicle platforms with the US automaker.

Mazda Motor has 18 main production plants, including two Japanese facilities and locations in Colombia, South Africa, Thailand, the US, and Zimbabwe. Its sales and service network includes about 2,000 sales outlets in Japan and 5,000 in other countries.
