**Why is “good hospitality” so spasmodic?**

Why is “good hospitality” so spasmodic?

“Hello, I'm John and I'm the taxi driver who will have the pleasure of driving you to the Airport." These were the words of welcome from a driver when I was leaving Melbourne last week. WOW! When did that last happen to you in a taxi in Australia? (Or, perhaps, anywhere in the world!).

And my Canadian friend, Kit Grant (see http://www.kitgrant.com/), recently wrote about the welcome we both received when we attended a conference in Singapore. In his regular newsletter, Kit wrote “I was greeted by an immigration officer who asked why I was in Singapore. Explaining I was speaking at a conference, his reply was: ‘Welcome to our country. We hope your business here is very profitable and we thank you for coming to Singapore.’"

“No, I'm not kidding!” continued Kit. “Contrast this with the usual greeting in either Canada or the USA. The grilling I received on returning to Canada was ridiculous. It should come as no surprise in 2015 (or earlier) when Asia becomes the driving force for the world's economy. The Asian attitude towards learning and development is outstanding. And as for Singapore Airlines it is everything you have heard about it — on time, super-friendly, efficient service on a nice aircraft with good food.”

Again I ask “Why is ‘good hospitality’ so spasmodic?” Does every member of your staff give an outstandingly friendly greeting to guests and customers? If not...why not?
