A business opportunity in December

If you already have a copy of my book “365 Marketing Ideas for the Hospitality Industry” you will know that the 17th of December, 2003, offers a wonderful opportunity to use history to create business in your Hotel, Restaurant, Bar, Tavern or Pub.

For, the 17th of December celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Aviation Industry (and I suggest the Travel and Hospitality industries too!) It was on this day, 100 years ago, when Wilbur and Orville Wright coaxed their 272 kg bi-plane into the air. The bi-plane was made of ash, wire and muslin and was powered by a 12 horsepower engine and two laminated spruce propellers. And the world’s first aeroplane ‘lifted off’ at 10.35am from a sand dune called Kill Devil Hill near the town of Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, USA. This first flight was for twelve seconds and the bi-plane ‘flew’ for 36 metres.

How can YOU use this information? Well, you might approach your local travel agents association and suggest celebrating this ‘moment in time’ at your place. The occasion can be as big or as small as you and an enthusiastic travel agent want to make it. It doesn’t have to be on the 17th of December (It doesn’t even have to be in December). If you don’t think you have enough time to create an occasion, at least, call your local travel agents and suggest they bring their staff or their best clients to lunch or dinner at your place to celebrate at your place.
