The College of California (original name) celebrates it 130th Anniversary in 1999. The College was established, in 1869, by Henry Durant. The College moved to Berkeley and graduated its first class (12 men) in 1873. Women enrollments began in 1870.

The University is now headquartered in Oakland and maintains eight primary campuses in Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. The system offers admission to all California high school students who graduate in the top 1/8 of their class. Enrollment now numbers in excess of 160,000 students.
