How to save time and money interviewing new staff

As you can see, we've now started publishing our weekly e-zine in a new format? We hope you enjoy it and find it easier to read. If you prefer the old (text only) format, click the "Text-only" link at the bottom of the page.

Mel Kleiman’s book “267 Hire Tough Proven Interview Questions” inspired this week’s note to you. Mel’s HIRE TOUGH fundamental principle is simple, yet powerful. Hiring the right employee, the first time, will reduce staff turnover. Hire tough - Manage easy...is Mel’s message!

“What made you feel you were interested in working here?” Mel suggests as a leading question. This question is an excellent market research tool. To improve future recruiting, it is important to know which qualities of your business attract potential employees. This question is also a good set-up for queries about expectations.

“What would be a good reason for somebody to steal something from work?” This is an ethics question. You do not want somebody who can quickly and easily justify theft. Though this does not indicate the candidate may steal from you, any excuse given should raise a serious warning flag.

“Have you ever been in a cash-handling position?” If yes, “Has the drawer ever come up short?” Everybody who has worked in a cashier position has had at least one experience where the drawer came up short. If a candidate says they have never had a short drawer, they are likely concealing something. If the interviewee says they have had a problem before, should ask what happened and how short. You might want to check out Mel’s site at www.hiretough.com.

Next week I want to share something I learned, about instant likeability, from an e-mail I received this week. Until then I wish you ‘hire tough-manage easy’ week.

Sincerely

Max Hitchins
